Dog Walking Business Names
Before you get a business license, or a checking account, you'll need a business name. Here's how to pick a great name and be sure that its in the clear for your use.
You know your dreams of having your own dog walking business are underway when you've picked a name. It does not have to be a clever name, or an attention getting name, but it should be something that explains what you do without anyone ever having to guess. It also needs to be a name that no one else in your state is using, and a name that no one else in the country is using with a trademark. In other words, you can use just about any name you want, except if someone else in your state is using the same name, or if anyone in the country who has trademarked their business is using the name.
You do not have to register your business name unless you start offering other services under a different business name, and then you will have to register a "fictious name" to let the world know what your legal business name is. Also, if you are setting up your company as a corporation, llc or a limited partnership, then your business name will be automatically registered when you file your articles of incorporation, articles of organization, or your statement of limited partnership, depending on whichever structure you are establishing.
If you are in doubt about this, have a lawyer do a quick name check for you. If you are going to use an LLC, a corporation or a limited partnership business structure, you will also need to meet your state's requirements for that. This is pretty easy to accomplish -- it means no one else can be using your company name, your company name must end in LLC, and you can not end your business name with any of the name buzzwords, like "city", "bank" or "insurance"... which you probably wouldn't have wanted to do anyways, given what your business is.
There are some fundamental rules for picking a name: it should be easily understood, easily remembered and easily spelled. Its nice if you can think of something distinctive, but be very careful -- everyone must understand exactly what you do as soon as they hear your name. If they don't, most of them will forget you.
